His quartet in the mid-1970's featured a guitar prodigy, Pat Metheny. One of his first bands was a jazz-rock experiment with the guitarist Larry Coryell, a contemporary. Burton has done his part to foster similar discoveries. A couple of years later, he left the Berklee College of Music for professional experience with the pianist George Shearing and the tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, then went out on his own.Īs a leader, Mr. Burton, a vibraphonist, was 17 when he played on his first recording session, with the Nashville guitar legend Hank Garland, in 1960. Precocious talent is an enduring theme in Gary Burton's musical career.
